How we record same sex marriages on a family tree. I think this is going to be a more common issue in view of changing social standards. So far I have not run into this problem with ancestors but it may happen with future generations.

Many family tree software programs do allow the recording of non traditional relationships. With others there are work-arounds such as customizable facts.
For example, in My Heritage simply marking both entries as the same gender switches the use of the terms wife or husband to “spouse”. For the entry of children there are the options of entering adopted, foster or step.
